The proposed 4,500-sq.ft. facility for the Darlington County Library will provide greatly needed meeting spaces, tutoring space, and dedicated teen space in addition to expanded collections and reading spaces for children and adults. Local students will have access to numerous new internet terminals and significantly more study space than the current facility.
The site, donated to the Library by local philanthropist Ernest Helms, is located on Society Hill's Main Street and is the former site of an antebellum residence that was destroyed by fire. The site plan preserves significant existing trees and sustainable design features include specifying of zero or low-VOC interior finish materials and utilizing a high-efficiency heat pump system. This project has been funded by the USDA's Rural Development Office.
