DMA worked with library staff and Trustees to propose an addition that would engulf the previous 1960's addition while maintaining the 28-foot square atrium opening between floors and emphasizing the importance of the original Carnegie building. The main north-south gable of the Carnegie Building served as a design element that inspired a succession of similarly scaled gables spanning the proposed addition.
While the Plan suggested economies associated with scheduling most of the work as one construction contract, some contemplated improvements, such as a new elevator tower, have already been undertaken as stand-alone projects.
